For the eighth consecutive year, the National Law School of India University (NLSIU), Bengaluru, has secured the No. 1 position in the NIRF 2025 Law Rankings released by the Ministry of Education. The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) evaluated institutions across 17 categories, highlighting the best performers in Indian higher education.

In the law category, National Law University (NLU), Delhi retained its second position, while NALSAR University of Law, Hyderabad, secured third place.

Rise in Competition Among Law Colleges

The 2025 NIRF rankings reflect intensifying competition among premier law universities. This year, the West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences (WBNUJS), Kolkata, climbed to the fourth position, followed by Gujarat National Law University (GNLU), Gandhinagar, at fifth place.

Interestingly, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kharagpur, which was ranked seventh in 2024, moved into the top 10 list, showcasing the growing role of multidisciplinary institutions in legal education.

These changes highlight how law colleges are consistently working on teaching quality, research output, inclusivity, and career outcomes to secure better rankings.

Performance in Previous Years

NLSIU has consistently maintained its lead in the past years. In 2023, it improved its score to 80.52 points, compared to 78.00 in 2022. NLU Delhi remained second with 73.91 points, while NALSAR Hyderabad climbed to the third spot with 73.76 points.

Meanwhile, WBNUJS Kolkata also saw upward movement, reflecting the steady rise of multiple institutions in terms of academic excellence and research innovation.

The NIRF Rankings are based on carefully designed parameters, including:

Since its launch in 2016, NIRF participation has grown massively from 3,565 institutions to 14,163 in 2025. The categories have also expanded from 4 to 17, making it one of the most comprehensive evaluations of higher education in India.
