Supreme Court’s Directions on SCBA Elections

The Supreme Court of India, on May 6, mandated that the elections for SCBA office-bearers be held on May 20, 2025. As per the court’s order:

  • The voter list from the 2024 elections will remain the baseline for 2025.
  • In addition to existing voters, all members who became eligible up to February 28, 2025, are allowed to be included in the final voter list.

A noteworthy reform introduced by the Court includes gender-based reservations:

  • The post of Secretary is exclusively reserved for a woman candidate in 2025.
  • One-third of Executive Committee posts (3 out of 9) and Senior Executive Member positions (2 out of 6) are also reserved for women.

This directive is a significant move toward gender inclusivity and representation in the upper echelons of legal administration.
